Spec & Synopsis

Date: 2008

Format: 5-monitor installation
Duration: 33.30 minutes (total)

Catalina is a multi-channel glimpse into the life of a Rezandera (praying woman), a professional mourner from the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Each of the 5 looped videos details a different aspect of her life, from mourning, singing and praying for the dead to getting married to her favourite pastime, playing baseball.

The work looks for the everyday in the extraordinary, inviting the viewer to relate to and enter into Catalina’s life, her commitments and beliefs for a moment.

Three of the videos are mute and one, in which Catalina talks about her life, is accessible through headphones as the overriding sound of the praying fills the space.
